Alignment, Repetition & Harmony

Prompt: Create a comp for a flyer for the Summer Nights concert series at the Rio Grande Zoo using repetition to create visual harmony.

In this ad I used repetition as the border through a graphic emphasizing the message that this is a summertime event. I used a break to separate the main graphic and text from the less important copy. I used a color pallete of yellow, two shades of grey and black for the type. The common yellow unifies the design visually bridging and establishing a connection between the headline, main image and copy below. While there is no type contrast, there is contrast of color emphasizing the time of year and the type of event (the lion here as a sort of synecdoche for the zoo). There is type contrast through font, separating the two messages. One font is used for the event location, date and time. Another font used for the type of event and the promotional text.

Prompt: Create a comp for an ad for a toy store using multiple objects. Experiment with different alignments for your objects without forgetting about contrast and emphasis!

I created three different advertisements utilizing strict alignment so I could play with the different concepts of contrast and emphasis. My favorite is the one in the middle that I believe utilizes these concepts best and, therefore, is the most impactful at getting the message across. I utilized different elements and a sort of repetition through grouping the PoP figures at the top, though, these elements were similar they were not identical. In most of the designs all text is centered except the one on the left which breaks from tradition relieving the red promotional text in broken fragments among the image. I felt this took away from the impact of both the text and image. I broke out space using geometric elements and color. I emphasized the promotion through type coloration all while staying within the color scheme of the ad. I played around with the placement of "Grand Opening" and the name of the toy shop "Tardis Toys," for different emphasis. The middle one is most effective in conveying a sense of structure by giving the logo a subtle strength over the other elements through size and emphasis of color/geometric design.

Prompt: Find one ad that displays good (or interesting) repetition and good (or interesting) alignment.

Alignment & Repetition

This advertisement piggy backing Baltic Management Institute (BMI) off Rolex brand recognition utilizes repetition and alignment through grouping same objects in the middle of a formal centered layout and repeating them in rows to create a block of images separated by the black background through spacing. I found the message conveyed through the hierarchy of images and text intriguing. By parading itself as a Rolex ad through repetition of a well known brand logo, the BMI effectively evokes a feeling or desire in the audience before getting around to it's pitch in the separated copy below. The type contrast through font and size emphasizes the message bridging the logo to the actual intent of the ad in the intentionally small text at the end.
